I think that the second book fleshed out the characters from the first book. The Magician is still an enigma and a puppeteer, but you start to see the human being he once was, and some of what motivates him. You also start to understand the backstories of the other major Arcana, and what motivates them to be on the council. I think that the one that is the most difficult to understand is Sara herself; she seems almost self-destructive in her need to keep from accepting help from anyone, though she is compelled to help those she sees as vulnerable. It's as though she is trying to provide the help she never got when she was young and vulnerable. I am still curious as to how she got into the "finding" game, since becoming a magical burglar is an interesting career change after working with missing persons as a child. Moving from lawful good to chaotic neutral is a big shift.
The mystery was actually a mystery, at least for me. The story took unexpected turns and twists that I didn't expect, and although there was some foreshadowing, even those things I expected happened differently. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Wilde Card Immortal Vegas Book 2 edition by Jenn Stark Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Review originally posted at Goldilox and the Three Weres.

Wow! This book was a trip. May I dare say... a wild ride. Sorry. I'm done with the puns now. Wilde Card was an excellent addition to an already great series. It's seriously non-stop action that will keep you on the edge of your seat. In this book, Sara is tasked with obtaining a set of scrolls that will be featured at an upcoming antiquities gala. The scrolls are thought to contain unimaginable power, and will certainly help with the fight against SANCTUS. Sara just has to get them without alerting her old crush, Detective Brody Rooks, who just happens to be watching Sara’s every move. While Sara is trying to pull off this job for the Council, more and more of the Connected are being drawn to Vegas. Nothing like providing SANCTUS with an even bigger and more tempting target than it already had, right?

I will say that I liked all the action but I wish there had been some more backstory for the characters. I'm still not sure as to why Sara is so hung up on Detective Brody. I would like to know more of their history. Just like I still want to know more about The Magician. Things are heading perilously towards love triangle territory but also not at the same time. Brody and Sara have a history but I feel like the chemistry between Sara and Armaeus is not something to discount. Overall, Sara is just confused when it comes to the whole romance side of things. But her confusion doesn't keep her from doing her job for the Council or from continuing to earn money to save the Connected children. I'm happy to say that we get more Armaeus and Sara togetherness in this book and it was great! And it was done in such a way that The Magician didn't lose his air of mystery. Holy, sexual tension, Batman!

I'm still loving this world and each book is slowly revealing the many layers of it. There's so much to learn! I love that we're slowly learning about Sara's ability. It's still a big mystery and that makes her even more of the wild card. I'm going to call it now, I think she'll become a power by the time everything is said and done.

We are also introduced to a couple other members of the Arcane Council. Specifically, we finally meet The Empress and The Fool. Simon, aka The Fool, was by far my favorite new character! I love that Stark decided to have at least one member of the Council be somewhat new to their role as one of the Major Arcana. Simon is The Fool newbie and it was so great to see a Council member who wasn’t all-knowing and was still getting to know his own powers. He kind of made the Council seem a little more human. Just a little though. Still many of the Council are more than a little other. Like The Devil. Also, I can't wait to find out what the heck is up with him.

Wilde Card is a great addition to the urban fantasy genre and an excellent sequel to Getting Wilde. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this series!

*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

After figuring out the Connected are under threat from a group called SANCTUS, Sara Wilde and those in the Arcane Council are anticipating an attack to come sooner rather than later. Sara, for her part, is taking on more jobs, earning more money and trying to help Father Jerome house the ever increasing Connected that come to him for safe haven. These jobs also keep Sara out of Vegas, which is a big check in the plus column.

But with her oracular obligations to the High Priestess and at the constant nagging of Armaeus Bertrand (aka The Magician), her respite is short-lived. When she does return, Sara is put in the service of the Council once again. This time it’s acquiring a set of scrolls that will be featured at an upcoming antiquities gala. These scrolls are thought to contain unimaginable power, and will certainly help with the fight against SANCTUS. Now, if only blast-from-her-past Detective Brody Rooks wasn’t watching Sara’s every move, maybe this job would go off without a hitch.

Getting Wilde was a great surprise to me when it was released a few months ago. Wilde Card continues on in the same vein, only I think being familiar with the characters and setting, and knowing what to expect with Sara’s often zany antics makes this one a better read.

There’s still a lot of mystery surrounding Sara’s power, and I’m ok with not getting the answers right away. I enjoyed seeing new things unfold, but I suppose the caveat with that is when all is finally revealed it better be spectacular—and with the way things have gone in these first two books, I have no fear that Jenn Stark will deliver.

Surprisingly, I’m also not turned-off by the potential love triangle between Sara, Armaeus and Brody. It’s amped up in Wilde Card due to the fact that Brody and Sara reunited later on in Getting Wilde. Like Sara’s feelings for The Magician, she doesn’t really know what game Brody is playing. She’s smart enough to know that some of the emotions she feels towards him resonate from the crush she harbored when they worked together years ago. I like the history between them, but there’s still no denying the chemistry between Sara and Armaeus.

I’m happy to report that, while still retaining his mysteriousness, Sara and Armaeus spend a lot more time together in this book, and despite her protestations about his controlling ways, it’s clear she feels something for him. What exactly that ‘something’ is, I suppose time will tell.

Jenn Stark introduced a couple other members of the Arcane Council The Empress (Roxie) and The Fool (Simon). Simon was by far my favorite addition. He’s somewhat new to his role of The Fool and it was nice to see a Council member who wasn’t all omnipresent and was still getting to know the ins and outs of his own powers. It brought out a more humane side to the Council.

If you haven’t checked this series out yet, I highly recommend it. Anyone who likes a strong, wise-cracking heroine and some delicious chemistry will find a lot to love about this series.
